Dreams and the unconscious. The literal dream state, yes, but also the daydream, the fantasy, the vision. Neptune governs the images that surface when the rational mind relaxes its grip — and the capacity to work with those images creatively or spiritually.
Art and creative transcendence. Not the craft — that belongs to other planets. Neptune governs the ineffable quality in art that makes it feel like it came from somewhere beyond the individual. The music that makes you weep without knowing why. The painting that seems to breathe. That is Neptune operating through a human being.
Spirituality and mysticism. Organised religion has a strong Jupiterian component. Direct spiritual experience — unity, dissolution of self, mystical states, the sense of connection to something vast and formless — that is Neptune. Meditation, prayer that goes beyond words, the experience of grace.

Neptune goes retrograde once a year for approximately five to six months — by far the longest retrograde period of any planet. Because Neptune spends so much time appearing to move backward, the distinction between Neptune direct and retrograde is more subtle than with faster planets.
What does shift during Neptune retrograde is the quality of the fog. Illusions may become slightly more visible — or slightly more intense. Some people experience greater clarity during Neptune retrograde: the dreams that seemed too beautiful suddenly reveal their cracks. Others find the confusion deepens. It depends heavily on what Neptune is aspecting in your natal chart at the time.
Neptune retrograde is genuinely useful for creative and spiritual work that requires going deeper rather than further. Meditation, psychotherapy, artistic revision, dream journaling — all activities that work with what is already present rather than launching into new territory. It is not a time to start new spiritual paths or make decisions based primarily on feeling or intuition. It is a time to review what you have been believing, and ask whether it is true.
