Mercury retrograde is a period, three or four times a year, when Mercury appears to move backward through the sky from Earth's point of view. It's an optical effect, not an actual reversal — Mercury never stops orbiting the Sun in the same direction. The illusion happens because Mercury orbits faster and closer to the Sun than Earth does, so when it overtakes us on the inside track, it briefly appears to slow, stop, and drift backward against the stars.
In astrology, this window is traditionally linked to miscommunication, delays, and technology hiccups — missed messages, travel snags, old contacts resurfacing. It's generally considered a better stretch for the re- verbs: review, revise, reconsider, reconnect, than for launching something brand new.
