— The astronomy

What void of course actually is

Every two and a half days or so, the Moon crosses from one zodiac sign into the next. On its way through a sign it forms a series of aspects, exact angles, with the other classical planets: the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Each of those aspects is traditionally read as the Moon "activating" something.

At some point in that transit, the Moon makes its last aspect before leaving the sign. From that moment until it actually crosses into the next sign, it has nothing left to trigger. It is, in the old phrase, void of course — sailing without a destination, still moving, but not steering toward anything new.

The timing is not fixed. If the last aspect happens early in the sign, the void period can stretch past a full day. If it happens right at the end, close to the sign boundary, the void period might only last minutes. Some transits barely have a void window at all.

Astronomical fact: the Moon's position and the angles it forms with other bodies are exact, calculable, and verifiable with any ephemeris. Astrological claim: that this particular window carries less follow-through than the rest of the transit. Both can be discussed. They are different kinds of statement.

What to do (and not start) during a void Moon

Well suited to a void Moon
  • Finishing something already in motion
  • Routine admin, chores, tidying, maintenance
  • Rest, reflection, journalling
  • Low-stakes browsing, research, window shopping
  • Letting a decision sit rather than forcing it
Traditionally avoided
  • Signing a contract or major agreement
  • Launching a project, business, or campaign
  • A first date, or a first meeting that matters
  • A significant purchase you want to keep
  • Starting a new routine you intend to stick to

"Void of course is not a warning. It is permission to stop pushing for one afternoon. Nothing you start here is cursed. It simply won't have the wind behind it that the rest of the transit had. Wait for the crossing, then begin."

Void of course, plainly

The Moon is not void of course right now. It is at 6.9° Leo, still applying to a square with Venus, exact in about 2h 32m. The void period begins after that. This page updates automatically from current ephemeris data.
A void of course Moon is the period after the Moon makes its last major aspect to another planet while in a sign, and before it crosses into the next sign. During this window the Moon is not building toward anything new astrologically. It is simply finishing its transit of the current sign with nothing left to trigger.
It varies a great deal, from a few minutes to well over a day. The length depends entirely on how early in the sign the Moon makes its last aspect. If the last aspect happens right at the start of the sign, the void period can last more than 24 hours. If it happens right near the end, the void period might only be minutes.
Traditional astrology advises against starting anything you want to last: signing contracts, launching a project, having a first date, making a major purchase, or beginning a new routine. Things begun under a void Moon are said to come to nothing, or to develop in a way that fizzles out or doesn't match what you intended. Routine tasks, rest, finishing existing work, and low-stakes activity are considered fine.
This page uses the classical seven-planet definition: aspects from the Moon to the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. This is the traditional method most astrologers still use. Some modern practitioners extend the calculation to include Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, which can occasionally shift the exact timing.
The underlying positions are real, observable astronomy — the Moon's position and the angles it forms with other bodies are calculable facts. The idea that this period carries less potency, and that beginnings made during it tend to fail, is an astrological interpretation layered on top of the astronomy, not an astronomical claim itself.
The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days, and it is void of course for some portion of nearly every one of those transits. Over a year that adds up to a meaningful fraction of total time, though the length of each individual void period varies widely.
