Not a guarantee — an open door, opportunity that only works if you walk through it
— The fundamentals
Most people think a sextile is just a nice aspect. It is something more specific: opportunity that requires participation — a supportive, workable angle between two planets that opens a door but does not walk you through it.
A sextile is 60° apart. It sits between the friction of a square and the effortless ease of a trine, and it is often confused with the trine, but the difference is the whole point. A trine, at 120°, tends to happen on its own, with little conscious effort. A sextile is easier than a square, but it still needs a deliberate step to activate. The door is genuinely open. Nobody is pushed through it.
This is why sextiles show up so often around skill-building rather than natural gift. Where a trine hands you something, a sextile shows you where practice pays off unusually well — if the practice actually happens. An unused sextile is not a failed aspect. It is simply an opportunity nobody took.
Sextiles are also strongly tied to constructive dialogue between two planets: not blended, as in a conjunction, and not automatic, as in a trine, but genuinely cooperative when both sides are engaged. “A trine is a gift you were handed. A sextile is a gift you were shown, and then asked to go and collect.”
— Domains
Opportunity. Doors that open, chances that appear, all requiring a deliberate step from you to actually use them.
Constructive dialogue. Two planets that can genuinely help each other, cooperative rather than merged or automatic.
Skill-building. Sextiles often point to talents that need real development, unlike a trine's natural, unearned gift.
Social connection. Traditionally linked to relationships and networking, since a sextile so often shows up between planets ruling communication and connection.
Timing sensitivity. Especially in transits, a sextile is often described as a window — genuinely open for a period, and worth using while it lasts. Check today's horoscopes to see whether a sextile is actively open in the sky right now.
“Nobody regrets a sextile they used. Plenty of people never notice the ones they didn't.”
— Notable pairings
Any two planets can be sextile, but some pairings come up often enough in charts and conversation to be worth naming individually.
— Questions
A trine, at 120 degrees, is an effortless flow between two planets — things happen naturally with little conscious effort. A sextile, at 60 degrees, is easier than a square but still requires deliberate action to activate. The door is open, but you have to choose to walk through it.
Not weak, different. Many astrologers consider a well-used sextile more valuable than an unused trine, precisely because it rewards genuine initiative rather than handing something over for free.
A door opening — an opportunity, a helpful conversation, a moment where two things in your life could easily support each other, if you take the step. Nothing forces it, which is exactly the point.
Astrologers allow an orb either side of the exact 60°. For major planets, up to roughly 4 to 6 degrees is typically still counted as a genuine sextile, with tighter orbs producing a stronger, more available connection.
Opening. A supportive angle between two planets that creates real opportunity, but one that has to be deliberately taken rather than one that arrives automatically.
— The five majors
Every relationship between two planets falls into one of a small number of aspects, each with its own character. The sextile is just one.
