Not just conflict — polarity, two poles that only make sense in relation to each other
— The fundamentals
Most people think an opposition just means conflict, two things fighting. It is something more precise: awareness through contrast — two planets facing each other across the full width of the chart, each one only fully visible because the other exists as its counterpoint.
An opposition is 180° apart, the maximum possible distance between two points in a chart. It occurs between signs of the same modality, just like a square, but here the elements involved are genuinely compatible rather than incompatible — fire opposes air, earth opposes water, pairings traditionally considered harmonious rather than combative. This is exactly why an opposition, despite the real tension it creates, tends to feel less like fighting yourself and more like meeting your own reflection in someone or something else.
The core function of an opposition is not resolution. Unlike a square, which demands change, or a trine, which asks nothing, an opposition asks you to hold two true, opposing things at once, rather than collapsing into just one side of the story.
Whether an opposition feels like a battle or a genuine balance depends heavily on awareness. Left unconscious, one side often gets projected outward — seen in a partner, a rival, a situation — rather than owned directly. Held consciously, it becomes one of the most integrative aspects in the whole chart. Generate your free natal chart to see exactly which two poles you were born holding.
“What you cannot stand in someone else is very often the exact thing your own chart is quietly asking you to own.”
— Domains
Awareness through contrast. Two poles that only make full sense in relation to each other, neither fused as in a conjunction, nor one collapsed into the other.
Relationship and partnership. Oppositions are strongly tied to how you meet the other, since the aspect literally describes facing something across the full width of the chart.
Projection. The tendency, when unconscious, to see one side of the opposition out there in another person, rather than owning it directly.
Balance, not resolution. Unlike a square, which demands change, an opposition asks you to hold two true things at once, rather than eliminating one.
Same modality, compatible elements. The technical root of why oppositions, despite the tension, are not automatically hostile. Check today's horoscopes to see if an opposition is actively shaping the sky right now.
“Every opposition is asking the same quiet question: can both of these be true, without one having to win?”
— Notable pairings
Any two planets can be in opposition, but some pairings come up often enough in charts and conversation to be worth naming individually.
— Questions
Not necessarily. An opposition creates real tension, but its deeper function is awareness through contrast, holding two true, opposing things at once rather than eliminating one. Handled consciously, it becomes a source of balance rather than a battle.
A square, at 90 degrees, occurs between signs of the same modality but incompatible elements, creating internal friction, like arguing with yourself. An opposition, at 180 degrees, occurs between signs of the same modality but genuinely compatible elements, fire and air, or earth and water, which is exactly why oppositions tend to feel more like meeting your own reflection in someone else than fighting yourself.
When one side of an opposition is not consciously owned, it is common to see that quality out there instead — in a partner, a rival, a situation — rather than recognising it as part of yourself. Oppositions are considered one of the most projection-prone aspects for exactly this reason.
Astrologers allow an orb either side of the exact 180°. For major planets, up to roughly 6 to 8 degrees is typically still counted as a genuine opposition, with tighter orbs producing sharper, more immediate awareness of the tension.
Polarity. Two poles facing each other across the full width of the chart, each one only fully visible because the other exists as its counterpoint.
— The five majors
Every relationship between two planets falls into one of a small number of aspects, each with its own character. The opposition is the last of the five majors.
